Nepal is a small but populous country of approximately 28 million located in the northern portion of the Indian subcontinent between India and China. Its capital is Kathmandu, which has a population of 800,000. Nepal is a land of many climates and varied topography, ranging from humid lowland plains in the south bordering India to the icy reaches of the Himalayan Mountains. Eight of the world's ten tallest mountains are in Nepal, including the tallest of all, Mount Everest. Nepal's renowned Sherpa mountain guides are essential when doing any serious mountain climbing in the upper Himalayas. The most famous of the Sherpas was Tenzing Norgay, who accompanied Sir Edmund Hillary on the first successful climb to Everest's summit in 1953.

One of the most well known legends concerning Mount Everest revolves around the 1924 climbing expedition by British mountaineers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. The two were seen making a final ascent to the summit on the afternoon of June 24th, 1924 but were never seen again. It is unknown whether either of the intrepid climbers, unsupported by external oxygen tanks, made it to the summit. It wasn't until 1999 that members of the Mallory and Irvine Research Expedition discovered Mallory's frozen body. The purpose of the expedition was to try to locate Mallory's camera, which may have contained film shot from Everest's summit.

The northeast district of Nepal near the Tibetan border, Mustang, is part of the Kingdom of Lo and is a challenge for lovers of adventure travel. Mustang gets its name from the Tibetan words Mun Tan meaning fertile plain. Lo was once part of Ngari in Tibet, a collection of feudal domains. It came under Tibetan rule during the reign of the most famous of the Tibetan kings, Songtsengampo. The area is divded by the Gandaki River, and its tributaries. Part of the river's valley, the Thak Khola forms the deepest gorge in the world.
