Prince Harry To Launch Everest Expedition
Mount Everest has always been an enormous attraction in Nepal and thousands of mountaineers have come here to pit their skills against nature, for the ultimate adventure. For those not ready to take on the world’s highest peak, have the option of climbing the variety of lower altitude peaks or trekking through the Mount Everest region, exploring its uniqueness and beauty. For anyone who comes to Nepal to roam this giant mountain, a few qualities are needed, namely courage, strength and determination, and it is these aspects that Prince Harry hopes to instill with his training expedition.
Prince Harry has always been known to be up for a challenge and always seeking a new adventure. This time round, his planned expedition to Mount Everest will not only a journey of discovery, but an initiative for soldiers who have fought in the war in Afghanistan and in Iraq and will be known as the Exercise Khumbu Challenge 09. The training expedition is set to take place in October 2009, and everyone in Nepal is excited about the launch of this expedition.
The launch of the expedition will be held in Plymouth, at the Devonport Naval Base, where wounded soldiers will demonstrate their climbing abilities on a climbing wall and Prince Harry will have the opportunity to explain the details of the expedition. There will be approximately ninety people selected to participate in the Exercise Khumbu Challenge 09, who will be divided into five teams. Various peaks will be climbed during the expedition, according to skill and capability levels of participants. Participants will be chosen from the Royal Marines as well as the Royal Navy. In addition, a few spots will be filled by injured soldiers as part of their rehabilitation program, giving them the opportunity to function within a military atmosphere.
Between twelve to sixteen experienced climbers will be selected for the main team, who will attempt various peaks in the region, including Lobuche East and Gokyo. The same amount of climbers, with a little less experience, will be selected for the High Altitude Development Team, who will attempt Lobuche East, Island Peak and Pokalde. The Exercise Khumbu Challenge 09 will be the first royal expedition to come to Nepal, and will no doubt be as successful as Prince Harry has been in all his previous ventures. Giving back to men who have served their country and risked their lives for others is a noble cause, especially when the gesture is able to re-establish their confidence, spirit and importance.
